Before you begin: supplies & mindset
Supplies you might need:
- Trash bags (for garbage)
- Donation box or bag
- Small boxes or bins for sorting
- Labels (sticky labels or a label maker)
- Marker / pen and paper or phone notes
- Clear bins or drawer organizers (optional)
Mindset tips:
- Start small. A 20–30 minute session is better than nothing.
- One area at a time (a drawer, a shelf, a closet, not the whole house).
- Progress > perfection. It won’t be perfect on the first try.
Step-by-step plan (detailed)
Step 1 — Choose one spot and set a goal (15 minutes)
- Pick a specific area: a junk drawer, your backpack, the bathroom cabinet, a bedroom closet, or a kitchen counter. Avoid trying to do everything at once.
- Decide what “done” looks like. Example goals: “All school supplies together,” or “Clothes folded and only summer clothes on this rack.”
Photo idea: Take a “Before” picture from a good angle that shows the whole space.
Step 2 — Empty everything and sort (20–60 minutes)
- Take everything out so you can see what you actually have.
- Create 4 piles: Keep, Donate/Sell, Trash, Unsure.
- Be honest — if you haven’t used something in the past year, consider donating it.
Photo idea: Snap a picture of the items spread out — it helps you make decisions and looks great in a before/after post.
Step 3 — Categorize and group (15–30 minutes)
- Put the “Keep” items into categories (e.g., pens, chargers, notebooks; or shirts, sweaters, pajamas).
- Use small boxes or bins to hold each category while you work.
Pro tip: Put frequently used items where they’re easiest to reach.
Photo idea: Take a photo of grouped categories — it’s motivating and helps you plan storage.
Step 4 — Choose storage and place items (30–60 minutes)
- Pick storage that matches the item size and how often you use it:
- Clear bins for visibility
- Drawer dividers for small items
- Hooks for bags and hats
- Vertical shelf organizers for papers or plates
- Label everything. Labels make maintenance easy and look satisfying.
Photo idea: Take an “In-progress” shot showing labeled bins or the new layout.
Step 5 — Clean up and take the After photo (10–20 minutes)
- Wipe down shelves, vacuum or sweep the floor, and put away trash/donations.
- Take a clear “After” photo from the same angle as your Before picture — the comparison is hugely motivating.
Suggested caption for your after photo:
“From chaos to calm: 1-hour closet refresh. ✨”
Maintenance: small habits that keep things organized
- 5-minute nightly reset: Put things back where they belong before bed.
- Weekly touch-up: Spend 10–15 minutes fixing anything out of place.
- Seasonal declutter: Every 3–4 months, re-evaluate clothes, school supplies, and décor.
Timelines you can try
- Quick fix (20–30 min): One drawer or shelf
- Deep tidy (1–2 hours): One closet or desk
- Refresh day (3–4 hours): Multiple drawers, a closet, and surfaces
